Silicone elastomers are defined as the elastomers that are made with a combination of linear polymers, reinforcing agents, a cross linker and a catalyst. The viscosity and type of the basic straight-chain molecule that is combined with the processing temperature determines the type of elastomer produced, such as, Heat Cured Rubber (HCR), Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR), and Room Temperature Vulcanization (RTV).
The silicone elastomers can also be reinforced with either mineral fillers that includes, silica, alumina, calcium carbonate, silicone resins, etc. Radical, condensation or addition crosslinking reactions can be used depending on the technology chosen to meet precise processing requirements.
The major factors that have boosted the market growth of silicone elastomers over the forecast period are the superior properties of silicone elastomers, aging population that is boosting the demand from healthcare industry, and the rise in demand for silicone elastomers from electrical & electronics industry. But, the stagnant growth in developed countries has restricted the market growth. Also, the disruption in supply chain has negatively impacted the raw materials prices. The sudden increase in demand from various sector has increased the raw materials and energy prices dramatically.
One of the major factor that has fuelled the market growth is the superior properties of silicone elastomers over the forecast period. This is because of their unique properties that includes, excellent high and low-temperature resistance, electrical insulation, physiological inertness, oil resistance, excellent weather ability, and flame retardance. Because of these unique characteristics, silicone elastomers are widely used to replace petrochemical products in various industries that includes, aerospace, munitions, automobile, construction, electric & electronics, medical, and food processing.
One of the major restrain to the market growth is the stagnant growth in the developed countries of the silicone elastomers market. This is because of the major end-use industries of these elastomers that includes, automotive & transportation, electrical & electronics appliances, and consumer goods have reached maturity. Also, the steady economic growth has also affected the growth of the market in major countries.
Type Insights
The High Temperature Vulcanized type has dominated the market growth over the forecast period. This is because, they have wide application areas because of their excellent properties, including the higher strength of siloxane bond, electrical conductivity, radiation resistance, steam resistance, flame retardance, oil resistance, and extreme temperature resistance.
End Use Insights
The electrical and electronics segment has dominated the market growth over the forecast period.
Process Insights
The extrusion segment has dominated the market growth over the forecast period. This is because in extrusion process, uncured rubber is continuously extruded through a die to form a desired, uniform, cross-sectional size, and also shape before curing. Also, this process generally has high production rates and short lead times and is ideal for tubing rods, larger gaskets, seals, wire insulation, and preforms for compression molding.
Regional Insights
The Global silicone elastomers market is segmented in to 5 main regions namely, North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, South America, Middle East and Africa. Among these, Europe has dominated the market growth over the forecast period. This is because of the trend of reducing vehicle weight in order to increase fuel efficiency in this region.
