Global Ethanol Market: Description
Ethanol is an organic compound made from fermented agricultural products, such as grain, leafy vegetables, and animal waste. Ethanol, unlike other renewable fuel sources can be directly converted into liquid fuels that are also known as biodiesel fuels in order to meet automotive fuel demands.
Ethanol is mainly produced through fermentation of sugars and starch and with the help of the necessary bacteria and yeast. There are two ways in order to create ethanol. These are, directly by using the animals' waste and indirectly by using wood and pulp from forests or wood chips.
The direct expression of the alcohol is done by the distillation of the alcohol. While, the indirect expression of the alcohol is done through the process of trans esterification where the end products of the fermentation are treated with chemicals for the purpose of clarification and separation. It results in a mixture of sugars and starch, and also, other elements, such as nitrogen and phosphorous are added.
When the mixture is fermented then the yeast converts it into ethanol and the mixtures are transferred to a vat, wherein they undergo further treatment for a period of time and during that time the mixtures ferment even more that results in more ethanol.
The demand for ethanol market is driven by the growing usage of ethanol as a biofuel. Ethanol can be manufactured by natural as well as petrochemical feedstocks and is also used in the manufacturing of alcoholic beverages. Thus, the rise in consumption of alcoholic beverages is also boosting the ethanol market demand.
Both the processes are important for the manufacturing of ethanol. In the natural process of ethanol, the natural sugars are fermented in the presence of yeast. Ethylene production is on a rise because of the rise in shale gas production. As the oil output has reduced and new ethylene capacities have come online, the market is expected to overstock with ethylene that is expected to bring stagnancy in production of ethanol. Sugar mills have become one of the major avenues of ethanol production, globally. Ethanol from molasses is now accepted globally and the emerging countries are leading the race. The disinfectant and coalescing properties are driving the demand of ethanol production.
One of the major market drivers of ethanol is it being a biofuel. The automotive industry has grown rapidly over the past years and faced many problems also to control air pollution. Ethanol gets blended with gasoline up to concentrations of 10% and 15% in order to tackle the problem of rising air pollution which is caused by automobiles. Also, the addition of ethanol has provided major advantages, such as improved fuel economy, increasing thermal efficiency and also helps in cold during the winter season. U.S. and Brazil are the two countries that are leading the world, in terms of application of ethanol as biofuel.
Another major factor driving the market growth is the increase in commercialization of sustainable ethanol-to-jet projects. Also, the rise in production of ethanol can also offer lucrative opportunities to the ethanol market.
