Turbocharger is a crucial part of Internal Combustion (IC) engine, which improvises its performance by raising the amount of air intake in the combustion chamber with the help of ejected burnt air. An IC engine requires extra air for combustion of additional fuel for large power generation that decreases its efficiency, thus, turbocharger plays a significant role in enhancing the efficiency by supplying compressed air. Global turbocharger market is expected to exhibit a notable growth in the coming years as these chargers ensure optimum engine performance and enhanced fuel efficiency.

Turbocharger particularly works best on high engine speed and does not require any power source to operate. It is driven by flow of burnt gases discharged by engine. Presently, this technology is majorly used in automotive and aerospace industries. For example, manufacturers employ turbochargers in engines of fast racing cars to generate high amount of power even under harsh and high temperature conditions.

Factors such as improved engine performance and fuel efficiency, government regulations and engine downsizing to reduce vehicle weight drive the growth of the turbocharger market. Moreover, turbocharger installation and excessive rise in engine temperature, owing to overheating issues in turbochargers are the factors that might hamper the augmentation of the turbocharger market. However, hike in demand for fuel efficient engines and gasoline engines is expected to supplement the growth of the turbocharger market during the forecast period.

Adding a turbocharger to the engine is beneficial, but the system tends to work more rigorously, resulting in wear and tear of the system. The turbocharger needs to withstand hot exhaust gases with temperatures as high as 1200°F. Hence, it becomes essential to circulate cooling oil as often as possible to keep the turbocharger cool. Thus, a turbocharged engine has high maintenance cost owing to the requirement of cooling oil. The replacement of turbos is also expensive. Poor maintenance of the turbochargers can lead to premature failures, which increase the load on engine cooling oil. Thus the new advancements in water-cooled turbochargers will make them consumer-friendly.

There are variety of reasons for the decline in the growth of diesel engines. Some of them are hiked fuel prices, rising global warming, and higher prices of diesel vehicles than petrol vehicles. In countries like India, South Korea, and Indonesia, diesel vehicles have seen a significant slowdown, and the demand for petrol engines has stimulated. Various emission norms such as Euro-6, China-VI, and PROCONVE P-8 have propelled the market for gasoline engines. This has augmented the growth of passenger car turbochargers production.

Turbo lag is a wide end challenge with conventional turbochargers. Turbo lag is the time a turbocharger takes to engender a positive pressure from the time the exhaust gases hit the turbine blades. As there are frictional and thermal losses, it takes time for a turbocharger to generate enough pressure to suck the air in. If a turbocharger is not installed properly, it will also create leakages, further worsening the turbo lag. Most diesel engines are equipped with conventional turbos, which have this lag.
